Having left a longtime job in Bolivar, MO, Howard Greenwood began his teaching and coaching career as an assistant coach at Nixa High School. Coach Greenwood started the Nixa Legion Program in or around the summer of 1988. Prior to starting the program, Nixa players had to join teams in outlying cities such as Springfield and Rogersville, with the majority playing at the Legion program in Republic. Having laid a strong foundation for the program, Coach Greenwood left the program in the hands of Steve Lail around the summer of 1990 when Coach Greenwood took the head baseball coaching position at Parkview High School in Springfield, MO.

At this point, the program became known as the “Tri-Lakes Team”, as most of the players came from the Branson area, though the program was still based out of Nixa. In 1994, Nixa and Branson separated, with Nixa once again forming their own Legion program. Two years later, when Coach Greenwood returned to Nixa, this time as the head varsity baseball coach, the program returned to his oversight.

The program has thrived once again under Coach Greenwood’s direction, being known as one of the tougher teams in the area --- particularly in the older age groups --- and having won the District Championship as recently as 2010. The program brings in plenty of talent from within Nixa, beginning as early as 6th grade, giving the players years to become indoctrinated into Coach Greenwood’s philosophy of how to play the sport.

2013 expects to be another strong year for the program. The varsity team will be coached by Coach Greenwood and longtime coach Greg Chappel. The junior varsity squad will be coached by former Nixa Eagle turned current Evangel Crusader Matt Walker, with an assistant to be named later. The freshman team will be coached by Cody Maynard and Adam Kragskow. The rookie squad will be coached by former Nixa Eagle and current Missouri State University student Keaton Towe and assistant coach Brandon Cobb.
